ingredient that treats acne. These ingredients include benzoyl peroxide,

salicylic acid, and sulfur, and they all work a bit differently. These

Step 5: Learn everything you can about how dermatologists treat acne. You may

decide your acne is too severe to be effectively treated by an over-the-counter

acne skin care product, and that you would prefer to have a doctor prescribe an

acne skin care product instead. Dermatologists treat many different types of

skin disorders and diseases, including acne. You might find it helpful to learn

about the types of acne medications a dermatologist is likely to prescribe.

Anti Aging Products are everywhere nowadays – as the population gets older more of us are interested in finding out what’s available to help us to look younger.

Many women don’t want to consider cosmetic surgery, but feel they want to look as good as they can in middle age and beyond. But where do you start? What’s available and how do you choose what will suit you?

Leaving surgery aside – there are a huge range of products from skin care and hair care to in office treatments for wrinkles and sagging skin.

Most anti aging skin care lines focus on the four steps to good skin care (cleanse, tone, exfoliate and moisturize) and include products that target each step. Moisturizing creams aim to hydrate skin as a first step and also include active anti aging ingredients to deal with skin wrinkling and sagging. The key actives are alpha hyaluronic acid (AHA), retinol, peptides, and antioxidants like vitamin e and vitamin c. Skin care products in the anti aging market also include temporary wrinkle fillers, botox alternatives and exfoliating or microdermabrasion cream and gels.

If you want to take it further than a topical cream or serum you can consider anti aging treatment either at home or in office. Most treatments target the signs of aging on the face and use low level interventions to lift and tone, relax or fill wrinkles, eradicate uneven skin pigment and restore radiance.

Again there is a bewildering range of options and most target one or two of the symptoms at most. The most well known anti aging treatments are probably botox and dernmal fillers, but there are also many laser skin treatments as well as photo facials, microcurrent and radiofrequency face lifts like thermage. In office facial treatments will often be more powerful and deliver greater improvement – you also get the benefit of combining treatments for the best overall result.

Anti aging cosmetics are one of the latest product developments – these aim to combine the active effects of the best skin care products with the benefits of a cosmetic. This means you can buy face makeup or concealers that make you look good whilst helping to deal with your wrinkles, puffy eyes or bags. The anti aging effect of these products is obviously lesened when combined with the cosmetic but they are worth considering.

An increasing trend recently is to seek a natural approach to anti aging through anti aging product that work from within. Hair care is much more targeted at the over 40 market with special shampoos, conditioners, finishing products and other treatments designed for older hair. Teeth whitening products and treatments are used by all ages but they have special importance as we get older as teeth darken with age. The condition of your teeth can be very aging and many women opt for bleaching treatments for the first time in their forties and beyond.

Anti aging hair care isn’t just confined to the hair on your head – there are many products now to help hair growth for eyebrows and eye lashes. These don’t specifically target the anti aging market but thinning eyebrows and lashes get worse with age and many of these have good results.

Whatever your interest – here’s our five step guide to finding what you want from all the anti aging products avaialble:

1. Decide what area you want to improve – are you most concerned about skin aging generally on your face or is it the wrinkles under your eyes that concern you most? Do you want to get rid of age spots? Are your teeth or hair making you look older? Focus on your most important priority.

2. Set a budget – think about how much money you are prepared to spend – an off the shelf product will cost less than a series of in office treatments but may not be as powerful. High end anti aging creams will cost more than simple moisturizers.

3. Know your limits – How much discomfort and downtime are you prepared to put up with? Some in office treatments come with quite high levels of pain and days off work. You may instinctively prefer a completely non invasive approach like skin care or an at home treatment.

4. Do your product research – Do you know what the product claims to do and whether it is backed up by research and results? Don’t buy unless you’ve done some research – whatever product you are thinking of. If the product involves any kind of invasive treatment (like dermal fillers or laser skin tightening) this is even more important. Research review sites and don’t just accept at face value what you read on sales sites – remember dermatologist and cosmetic surgeons sell their procedures too.

5. Choose quality suppliers – if you want skin care go for dermatologist brands at the high end for good results. The same applies to choosing a skin clinic or cosmetic dentist for your procedure.

The message in all of this: choosing the right anti aging products is just like any other consumer decision you make. You need to do your research and proceed with care so you can buy with confidence. You’ll have much more chance of a successful outcome if you do.

UPDATE 04/23/10: Recently I have been spending a lot of time and energy learning about ingredients that are often found in beauty products. As a result, I no longer endorse this particular product due to the fact that it contains parabens such as methylparaben and butylparaben as well as other chemicals. —————————————– I have to admit, I am not the biggest Kiehls fan. I have experienced only minimal success with most of their product line, however I absolutely love their Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro-Dermabrasion treatment. See reviews on other natural beauty products at: www.kellytirman.com I have been using this product religiously (2-3 times a week) for a year. It leaves my skin super smooth without the raw irritated feeling I have experienced from other scrubs. This polishing cream is formulated with crushed microshells derived from ocean sand in a shea butter base. There is no fragrance or added acids, which is probably why it doesnt irritate my skin like other scrubs. Although this product is expensive, it is nowhere near as expensive (or time consuming) as spa micro-dermabrasion treatments. As a result of this product combined with the rest of my beauty routine my complexion looks just as good (if not better) than when I used visit an esthetician monthly.

This is going to be a product review / FIRST LOOK of a brand new release from La Mer: The Eye Balm Intense. To start the review, I feel that I need to mention a little history of this product. So, as you may know, The Eye Balm was the predecessor to The Eye Balm Intense. Out of all of La Mer’s product range, The Eye Balm was always one of their under achievers. The packaging was a bit awkward, it didn’t really stand out amidst an array of other heavy-hitting options. In fact, The Eye Balm became notorious for being a hit or miss product for people (there didn’t seem to be a middle-ground). In fact, it scored in the mid-three range on makeup alley out of 175 reviews, which is a very average rating. For these reasons, I am not surprised that La Mer decided to discontinue The Eye Balm and come out with a bit more innovative and substantial option…that being the brand new Eye Balm Intense. From what I can tell from comparing these two eye balms (The Eye Balm and The Eye Balm Intense), I have a feeling that the newer version will fare a bit better. There are many similarities between the original Eye Balm and this second generation eye balm. The color is the same (a small amount of Green #5), and the consistency is similar. However, the product has been reformulated with what I would consider significantly higher quality ingredients. For one, there are no parabens in The Eye Balm Intense, whereas the eye balm had one form of a paraben, though in an extremely small quantity …

How not to Choose a Good Anti Aging Skin Care Product

The anti aging and skin care industries are huge. Millions or billions of dollars are spent by consumers on anti aging skin care treatments, and so there is big money to be made. And there are plenty of big companies in the anti aging and cosmetics industry that take advantage of this.

The result is that many mainstream anti aging skin care products just don’t work. The cosmetics and skin care industry is quite unregulated in the US, and so the big cosmetics and skin care companies can put any product on the market without first proving that it works, and even without showing that it is safe for the people who use it.

As a result there are many anti aging skin care treatments available that don’t work, and contain suspect, or known to be dangerous ingredients.

But they sell in spades to cater to the desire of so many consumers to look younger, or at least to believe that they will look younger. And so there are hundreds of well known brand name products that promise all sorts of anti aging benefits everywhere you look.

So, how do you navigate your way through all this to choose an anti aging skin care treatment that does work, and doesn’t contain ingredients that you should be scared of?

Here’s how not to choose a good anti aging product.

1. Don’t buy any skin care products that include fragrances in them. Now of course everyone likes to smell good, and the cosmetics companies pander to that, by adding fragrances to their products. Apply the cream and smell good and look young all at the same time.

There’s 2 problems. Firstly you won’t look younger because chances are the skin cream won’t make you look younger, though you may feel good about having used it.

Secondly, fragrances are not good chemicals to put on your skin. Because that’s what they are, chemicals that smell good, and many of them aren’t that good for you. It’s the same with perfumes, for example, but if you apply a perfume it’s only a small squirt on one spot, it’s not massaged all over your face where it disappears, into your blood. So just use a perfume instead.

2. Don’t buy skin care creams that have collagen in them. Now this at first glance appears counterintuitive doesn’t it? Everyone knows that collagen, or the breakdown of collagen in your skin, leads to sagging and wrinkling of the skin so putting more collagen on must be good.

Not necessarily. Yes it’s good to replenish the collagen, however collagen molecules are quite large and don’t really enter the skin. So rubbing it on might make you feel good, but doesn’t really add to the levels of collagen in your skin.

The best way to improve the collagen levels in your skin is to stimulate the body to produce more collagen itself.

However remember, the big cosmetics and anti aging companies are in the business of selling their products. If they put collagen on the label people buy it. And if they put it in a fancy bottle and get a good looking celebrity to say how much younger they look using it, then it will sell.

Even if it doesn’t do anything for you. Even if it’s got suspect ingredients. It will sell.

That’s marketing for you.

Problem is, all this marketing is expensive. The good looking celebrity has to be paid, usually lots, the fancy bottles need to be purchased, and the advertising costs a bomb.

So the anti aging skin care treatment that really doesn’t do much costs a bomb too. But that’s ok because people believe that if it’s expensive it must be good. So they pay anyway.

So there is 2 things to avoid when looking for a good anti aging skin care treatment. There’s more but this is getting long.

Does all this mean that you should give up on anti aging creams and products because they don’t work? Not at all. There are excellent anti aging products that work fine, produced from ingredients from plants that are safe to use.

But they are produced by small niche companies that you’ve probably never heard of, who quietly produce high quality products at reasonable prices because they don’t pay the good looking celebrities and spend up big on TV advertising. That’s why you’ve never heard of them. If they started doing that their products would cost a bomb too.

So don’t despair. I’ve given you some things to look for when buying an anti aging skin care product, and told you that there are excellent products available. Now it’s your turn to find them.

Your skin is still much too young for that kind of exfoliation. If you really want to minimize your pores, just make sure you clean your face every morning and night and use a scrub, like st. ives apricot scrub once a week. Don’t use anything that harsh on your face yet. It will only irritate it. Also, use a sunscreen on your face. It will help with aging in the long run.
